Kovalam is an internationally famed beach destination situated south of the capital city of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram. With three adjacent crescent beaches - Lighthouse beach, Eve’s or Howah beach and the Ashok beach, Kovalam has been a favourite haunt of tourists since the 1930s.
An ideal sea shore for sea bathing and surfing, Kovalam offers plenty of leisure options like sunbathing, swimming, snorkeling, herbal body toning massages, special cultural programmes, cycling on the beach and catamaran rides.
An alluring coastal village in the yesteryears, Kovalam is now one of the most visited beach destinations of India.
This charming beach destination gained attention after the Regent Maharani
Sethu Lakshmi Bayi, a member of the Royal Family of Travancore erected her beach resort, Halcyon Castle, here in the late 1920s. Since then Kovalam is considered to be one of the most beautiful destinations in the city of Thiruvananthapuram.
The European guests of the then Travancore kingdom also found Kovalam as a potential beach destination, which actually shot into limelight in the early seventies when hippies who were on their way to Ceylon in the Hippie Trail arrived here.
Kovalam offers three major beaches in its coastline. The Lighthouse Beach located on the southernmost part is the most popular of the three. Other beaches include Howah Beach and the Samudra Beach. The Samudra beach gets crowded with travelers especially during weekends and is very popular with the locals and day-travellers.
There are various hotels and restaurants here alongside lodges and shops where you will get food at comparatively reasonable rates. Enjoy the serene and relaxed atmosphere of Kovalam when you visit this heavenly beach.
